Salah satu tokoh yang juga populer dan siap menjadi calon presiden 2014 adalah Mahfud MD. Mantan ketua MK ini beberapa bulan yang lalu sebelum berkhirnya jabatan ketua MK sempat mengungkapkan kesediaannya. Mahfud saat ini menjadi salah satu calon presiden yang cukup populer dan memiliki reputasi yang sangat baik.

Mahfud MD yang berlatar belakang akademisi dan guru besar di Universitas Islam Indonesia Yogyakarta ini sebelumnya juga pernah menjadi kader Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB) dimasa pemerintahan Gusdur. Sehingga saat ini juga memiliki peluang yang cuku besar untuk dicalonkan oleh PKB. Walaupun saat ini terlihat PKB masih "water test" dengan beberapa tokoh yang mencalonkan diri menjadi presiden seperti Roma Irama, sepertinya peluang Mahfud MD untuk maju dari partai PKB ini masih terbuka lebar.

Pertanyaannya, akankah suara PKB mencukupi untuk mengajukan calon presiden ? sepertinya tidak, mengacu pada pemilu 2009 partai yang saat ini diketuai oleh muhaimin iskandar ini memperoleh suara yang tidak terlalu besar, apalagi saat ini kondisi PKB yang tidak terlalu solid terutama perpecahan antara kubu Muhaimin iskandar dengan kubu Yeni wahid. Tetapi walaupun ditimpa berbagai masalah internal PKB masih memiliki pendukung solid terutama dari kalangan pesantren.

Kemungkinan lain seperti halnya dahlan iskan, mahfud md juga memiliki kesempatan untuk mengikuti konvensi partai demokrat. pertanyaanya sama, akankah mahfud md bersedia untuk mengikuti konvensi partai demokrat ?

Mungkin mahfud juga harus berusaha lebih untuk bisa maju dan dicalonkan menjadi calon presiden dari partai manapun, disela kegiatannya sudah diluar pemerintahan tentunya mahfud md memiliki banyak waktu untuk melakukan safari politik  dan mendekati berbagai pertai politik.
